Endowments
Since 1981, the Catholic Foundation has provided the means for people to build permanent endowments for the ongoing mission and ministry of the Church in the Diocese of Tucson. With permanent endowments, the principal of the endowments remain untouched and only the earnings are distributed. This creates an everlasting investment in the work of the Gospel throughout Southern Arizona. The Catholic Foundation is currently entrusted with 79 endowments, each listed below.
Interested in establishing an endowment?
A gift to the Catholic Foundation to establish an endowment must be accompanied by a signed endowment agreement. The minimum amount to establish an endowment is $25,000. The Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Tucson is excited to announce our latest endowment, the Deacon Leo Longoria Family Endowment. Established by Deacon Leo Longoria in loving memory of his wife, Anita, and daughter, Veronica, this endowment will support service projects at the Diocese of Tucson Pastoral Center, currently known as Thankful Thursdays.
Administrative Endowments
Purpose: The Cornerstone Fund, a lasting endowment, is designed to provide unrestricted support for the religious, educational and charitable works of the diocese – a gift that keeps on giving. In 2019, $14,000 was received from the estate of Margaret Buckelew toward adoption, foster care and pregnancy purposes.
Board Designated (Owned) Endowments
Purpose: Resulting from a bequest, income from this endowment is used to provide direct assistance to a child or children in need.
Purpose: Established in 1996. Support for the “works of the Lord” in the Diocese of Tucson as may be directed from time to time by the Bishop of Tucson.
Purpose: Established through a gift from a revocable trust, income from this endowment is used to help children and the elderly in the Diocese of Tucson, as well as other needs as designated by the Catholic Foundation Board of Directors and the Bishop of Tucson.
Purpose: Support for financially disadvantaged parishes.
Purpose: Formally known as the Youth Ministry Endowment. Changed in 2005. The Youth Ministry Endowment was established in 1999 with proceeds from the Catholic Foundation Annual Dinner. Income is used to support youth ministry programs in the Diocese of Tucson.
Purpose: Established by Ms. Bertha Johnson in memory of her beloved brother, Joseph Baron, this endowment provides funding for counseling for married couples.
Purpose: Support for the on-going formation of priests in the Diocese of Tucson.
Purpose: Established in 1992 by bequest from Catherine Dougherty. Support for the education of seminarians.
Purpose: Established in 1989 by Mrs. Sally Leonard following the death of her husband, Laumer, income from this endowment fund is used to provide tuition support for financially disadvantaged children, special projects and equipment needs.
Purpose: Established by an anonymous donor, income from this endowment fund is used to help the poor.
Purpose: Established in 2008 from Bishop Moreno bequest. Support for vocations programs in the Diocese of Tucson.
Purpose: Established by the donors to support Catholic schools in the Diocese of Tucson.
Purpose: Established by an anonymous donor in 2010, this endowment provides scholarships to young adults in the Sierra Vista/Ft. Huachuca area seeking post high school education.
Purpose: Established by an anonymous donor in 2010, this endowment provides tuition assistance to students in the Sierra Vista/Ft. Huachuca area who attend Catholic school.
Purpose: Scholarships for men studying to be priests in the Diocese of Tucson.
Purpose: Established in 2013. Provides scholarships for post-high school education to students from our Catholic high schools who are attending ANY college.
Purpose: The Charles G. Gallegos Family Youth Ministry Endowment was established by Deacon Charles A. Gallegos and Margaret A. Gallegos in honor of Charles G. Gallegos and Elvira C. Gallegos, for their dedicated belief in and contributions to youth ministry. This endowment provides perpetual support for Youth Ministry Retreats for young people in rural or under-resourced parishes so that they may also have the opportunity for an encounter with Christ and receive the gift of faith.
If a youth minister or parish representative is interested in applying for funds from the Charles G. Gallegos Family Youth Ministry Endowment, grant applications may be submitted through the Catholic Foundation’s grant portal each September 1st through December 31st through this link: https://catholicfoundation.smapply.org/ Funds may be used to support all aspects of youth ministry retreats/events, including scholarship attendance, program expenses, materials, transportation, meals and lodging.
Purpose: Annuitants Michael Zimmerman & Rita Barsotti Donations Endowed unrestricted to Catholic Foundation.
Purpose: Provides scholarships to any college for any child who attends a Catholic HS within the Diocese of Tucson.
Purpose: Established in 2015 in acknowledgment of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, supports Catholic healthcare ministry in Tucson and Southern AZ.
Board Administered (Custodial) Endowments
Purpose: Established by Ann Katherine Raskob in 1987, income from this endowment goes to feed the homeless and hungry at Casa Maria soup kitchen.
Purpose: This fund was established to provide support for the health and human services programs of Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona.
Purpose: Established in 1995 to benefit Sacred Heart Church.
Purpose: Undisclosed.

Purpose: Support for outreach ministries of the parish.

Purpose: Proceeds from this endowment fund assist in meeting the needs of Catholic Community Services in Cochise, Graham, Greenlee and Santa Cruz Counties.
Purpose: Established in 2007 by bequest of Lorraine Moreno. Additional monies raised by the parish will also be invested. For general use by the parish.
Purpose: Established in 1998. Earnings to benefit Our Lady of the Valley Parish.
Purpose: Undisclosed.
Purpose: Distributions made to the St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center will be expended at the direction of the Finance Committee of St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center.
Purpose: Established in 2000 to benefit charitable works at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. Income to be used at the pastor’s discretion.
Purpose: Undisclosed.
Purpose: This endowment provides for the charitable outreach programs of the parish.
Purpose: Established in 2005 with monies donated to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish to benefit the liturgy and/or religious education purposes.
Purpose: This endowment provides income for Immaculate Conception School in Yuma, Arizona.
Purpose: This scholarship endowment fund was established in memory of Michael H. O’Brien to provide scholarships for children of registered parishioners of St. Joseph Parish in Tucson who attend the parish school.
Purpose: Undisclosed.
Purpose: The parish established this endowment in 1996 to support the educational needs of the school.
Purpose: Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for benefit of St. Charles School.
Purpose: This endowment fund was established in 1991 by donors to receive and hold gifts. Income from this fund goes to support various school programs and projects.
Purpose: Established by the parish in 1993, income from this fund is used to support the educational mission of the school.
Purpose: This endowment fund was established in 1995 to receive and hold funds for the benefit of St. Joseph School.
Purpose: This endowment supports the educational mission of Immaculate Heart Academy and Immaculate Heart High School.
Purpose: Income from this fund assists in meeting the needs of Lourdes Catholic High School in Nogales, Arizona.
Purpose: Income from this fund goes to support the educational mission of the Loretto Catholic school in Douglas.
Purpose: Income from this endowment goes to support the mission of the school.
Purpose: This endowment fund was established to provide support for the educational mission of the school.
Purpose: Established in 1999. This fund was established to provide assistance to needy schools.

Purpose: Income from this endowment fund is used to support educational programs of St. Thomas the Apostle Pre-Kindergarten School.

Purpose: Established by Louis J. and Lori M. Giovannini, in honor of Ms. Stella Longo, income from this endowment fund is used to support St. Cyril of Alexandria School in Tucson.

Purpose: Income from this endowment fund goes to support the educational mission of St. Augustine Catholic High School.
Purpose: This endowment was established in 2006 in memory of Gerard Guerin a parent at St. Cyril School. Income from this fund goes to support athletic programs at the school.
Purpose: This endowment was established through a bequest in 2002. Income from this endowment fund provides scholarships for students at Yuma Catholic High School.
Purpose: Established in 2001 by an anonymous donor. Income from this endowment fund provides scholarships for students of any family of modest means who otherwise could not afford tuition attending Yuma Catholic High School.
Purpose: At the end of each school year, a scholarship will be awarded to an 8th grade student at St. Joseph School, who will be attending a Catholic High school the following year.
Purpose: This endowment was established in 2007 in memory of Jaime Lang a parent at St. Cyril School. Income from this fund goes to support athletic programs at the school.
Purpose: Established in memory of Liesel R. Zimmt, income from this fund goes to a graduating senior from San Miguel High School to support their college education.
Purpose: Undisclosed.
Purpose: Established in 2010 by Frank Reilly to provide scholarships to students in need at San Xavier Mission School.
Purpose: Established in 2011. To support St. Vincent de Paul Society of Tucson, to use the income in support of the poor in Tucson, including, but not limited to, clothing, food, utilities, etc. This bequest is not to be used by St. Vincent de Paul Society for new building construction or remodeling of existing buildings.
Purpose: Support San Miguel HS Corporate Internship Program.
Purpose: Established by St. Thomas More Society of Southern AZ in 2011. To support scholarships for law student(s) studying at the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona. The Criteria and awarding of scholarships is determined by the STMS Board or committee assigned by the Board. The fund is dedicated in honor of the Honorable John Roll.
Purpose: Support for the Diocesan newspaper.
Purpose: Established in January, 2015, for the sole purpose of supporting St. John the Evangelist Catholic School to provide scholarships for tuition for one child per year.
Purpose: Established in 2015 by a gift from Arizona’s Catholic Tuition Support Organization, this fund was established to support Catholic Education within the Diocese of Tucson.
Purpose: The Robert & Isabella Duckro Endowment for Faith Formation was established by Paul N. Duckro and Lynn J. McLaughlin to support programs of Ss. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church to form adults, adolescents and children in the Catholic Faith with the goal of enlivening participation in worship and enriching lives by teaching the application of the Faith to every aspect of human experience, and sharing with other parishes the best practices to do so.
Purpose: To support student scholarships at Yuma Catholic High School.
Purpose: To support student scholarships at St Francis of Assisi Elementary School in Yuma.
Purpose: To support the programs of the Sister Jose Women’s Center in all aspects, including capital or operating expenses.
The Deacon Leo Longoria Family Endowment was established by Deacon Leo A. Longoria, Sr., in loving memory of his wife of 68 years, Anita Figueroa, and his daughter with special needs, Veronica Marie, for the purpose of supporting community service projects at the Diocese of Tucson Pastoral Center. Currently, the Catholic Foundation hosts a quarterly service project, known as Thankful Thursdays, at the pastoral center.
In recognition of Veronica’s favorite charitable works, one service project each year must benefit children, with a special emphasis on those unable to afford school supplies and those currently being treated for cancer.
