Catholic Foundation Endowments

The Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Tucson manages more than 70 endowment funds. These funds have been entrusted to the care of the foundation by donors who have chosen to share of the blessings of their labor for the common good of God’s people. As with any endowment funds, only the earnings are distributed; the principal remains untouched in perpetuity.

The following endowments are listed in five categories:  Charitable Endowments, Educational Endowments, Scholarship Endowments, Parish Endowments and Religious Endowments

 

Charitable Endowments

Albert Jean Beraud Sr.
Resulting from a bequest, income from this endowment is used to provide direct assistance to a child or children in need.

Albin and Miriam Vihtelic
Supports St. Vincent de Paul Society of Tucson to help the poor.

Casa Maria
Established by Ann Katherine Raskob in 1987, income from this endowment goes to feed the homeless and hungry at Casa Maria soup kitchen.

Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona
Established to provide support for the health and human services programs of Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona.

Catholic Community Services in Southeastern Arizona
Assists in meeting the needs of Catholic Community Services in Cochise, Graham, Greenlee and Santa Cruz Counties.

Cornerstone
Established in 2001 by the Board of Directors of the Catholic Foundation with proceeds from the Annual Dinner in honor of Bishop Manuel D. Moreno's 20th anniversary, to meet the most pressing needs in the Diocese.

General Endowment for the Diocese of Tucson
Established to further religious and charitable activities in the Diocese of Tucson.

Hughes Family Trust
Established by Msgr. Don H. Hughes, to support the Diocesan newspaper.

Msgr. Don H. Hughes Memorial
Established through a bequest, income from this fund is used for the works of the Lord in the Diocese of Tucson as may be directed from time to time by the Bishop of Tucson.

Joseph Baron
Established by Ms. Bertha Johnson in memory of her beloved brother, Joseph Baron, provides funding for counseling for married couples.

Merilac Lodge
Supports Merilac Lodge, a residential care facility for teens between ages 12 and 18 who are pregnant and/or parenting a child under one year old.

Phillip C. & Clara Read Memorial
Established through a gift from a revocable trust, to help children and the elderly in the greater Tucson area.

St. Joseph's Healthcare
Established in acknowledgment of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, to support Catholic healthcare ministry in Tucson and Southern AZ.

St. Pancras
Established by an anonymous donor to help the poor.

Zimmerman and Barsotti 
Established from an annuity, to support the unrestricted needs of the Diocese of Tucson.

Educational Endowments

Catholic School Assistance
Provides assistance to needy schools.

Catholic Tuition Support
Established by Arizona's Catholic Tuition Support Organization, to support Catholic education throughout the Diocese of Tucson.

Charles G. Gallegos Family Youth Ministry
Provides perpetual support for youth ministry retreats for young people in rural or under-resourced parishes.

Gerard Guerin Memorial
Established in memory of Gerard Guerin, a parent at St. Cyril School, to support athletic programs at the school.

Immaculate Conception Education - Yuma
Provides income for Immaculate Conception School in Yuma, Arizona.

Immaculate Heart School - Tucson
Supports the educational mission of Immaculate Heart Academy and Immaculate Heart High School.

Jamie Lang Memorial

Established in memory of Jaime Lang, a parent at St. Cyril School, to support athletic programs at the school.

Mr. & Mrs. Laumer C. Leonard Catholic Education 
Established by Mrs. Sally Leonard following the death of her husband, Laumer, to provide tuition support for financially disadvantaged children, special projects and equipment needs.

Stella Longo Education
Established by Louis J. and Lori M. Giovannini, in honor of Ms. Stella Longo, to support St. Cyril of Alexandria School in Tucson.

Pat and Marilou Lopez
Established by the donors to support Catholic schools in the Diocese of Tucson.

Loretto Catholic School - Douglas

To support the educational mission of the school.

Lourdes Catholic High School - Nogales
Assists in meeting the needs of Lourdes Catholic High School in Nogales, Arizona.

Pope John Paul II Endowment for Youth
Established by gifts from numerous donors, to support youth ministry programs in the Diocese.

St. Ambrose School - Tucson
To support the educational mission of the school.

St. Anthony of Padua School - Casa Grande
To support the educational needs of the school.

St. Augustine Catholic High School - Tucson
To support the educational mission of St. Augustine Catholic High School.

St. Charles School - San Carlos

Established in 1994 with an initial gift from the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament; to support St. Charles Mission School, located on the San Carlos Apache Nation.

St. Cyril School Education - Tucson
To support various school programs and projects.

St. Francis of Assisi School - Yuma

Established by the parish in 1993, to support the educational mission of the school.

St. John the Evangelist School - Tucson
Established to provide support for the educational mission of the school.

St. Joseph School Education - Tucson

Established in 1995 to receive and hold funds for the benefit of St. Joseph School.

St. Thomas the Apostle School - Tucson
To support educational programs of St. Thomas the Apostle Pre-Kindergarten School.

San Miguel High School - Tucson

To support the educational mission of San Miguel High School.

San Miguel High School Corporate Internship - Tucson
To support San Miguel High School's Corporate Internship Program.

San Xavier Mission School - Tucson
Funded in part through a trust, to support San Xavier Mission School in the San Xavier District of Tohono O'odham Nation.

Santa Cruz Catholic School - Tucson

To support the educational programs of the school.

Yuma Catholic High School - Yuma
To support the various programs and projects of Yuma Catholic High School.


Scholarship Endowments

Paul James & Mary Anita Benson Memorial Scholarship
Established through a bequest in 2002 to provide scholarships for students at Yuma Catholic High School.

Mary K. Campbell Scholarship
Established to provide scholarships to any college for any student attending a Catholic High School in the Diocese of Tucson.

Didinium Scholarship
Provides scholarships for post-high school education to students from either St. Augustine or San Miguel who are attending ANY college.

Michael H. O'Brien Scholarship
Established in memory of Michael H. O'Brien to provide scholarships for children of registered parishioners of St. Joseph Parish in Tucson who attend the parish school.

Molly B. Reilly Memorial Scholarship
Established by Frank Reilly to provide scholarships for students in need who attend San Xavier Mission School.

St. Andrew K-12 Tuition Assistance Scholarship
Established by an anonymous donor, to provide tuition assistance to students in the Sierra Vista/Ft. Huachuca area who attend Catholic school.

St. Andrew Post High School Scholarship

Established by an anonymous donor, to provide scholarships to young adults in the Sierra Vista/Ft. Huachuca area seeking post high school education.

Snyder Ranch Perpetual Scholarship
Established in 2001 by Mr. and Mrs. John E. Cunningham of Seattle, Washington, income from this endowment fund provides scholarships for students of families of modest means who otherwise could not afford tuition attending Yuma Catholic High School.

Southard Family Scholarship

Established by James and Elsie Southard, income from this endowment fund is used to provide tuition support for needy students at St. Joseph School in Tucson.

The Honorable John Roll Scholarship
Chief U.S. District Court Judge John Roll embodied the virtues of commitment to the Church, scholarship, integrity and courage during his life and received the annual St. Thomas More Society award posthumously in 2011. He was a great example of being a devout Catholic and a very successful lawyer and judge. In order to encourage law students in the formative years of their careers to adopt those virtues in their actions, The St. Thomas More Society established the Honorable John Roll Endowment with the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Tucson. This endowment will be used to grant scholarships to University of Arizona Law students who have demonstrated those virtues. Through the application process, the endowment can promote those virtues among law students and encourage them to adopt them. The Saint Thomas More Society invites you to help sustain the legacy of Judge Roll by contributing to this Endowment and making scholarship opportunities available to deserving students. Anyone may make a contribution to this endowment fund.

Richard Alan Wethington Memorial Scholarship

Established by Mike and Irma Wethington for the sole purpose of providing scholarships to any student who wishes to attend St. John the Evangelist Catholic School.

Liesel R. and Werner Zimmt Scholarship
Established in memory of Liesel R. Zimmt, to provide a scholarship to a graduating senior from San Miguel High School to support their college education.

Zach Morgan Scholarship
Established in memory of Zach Morgan, to provide scholarships to 8th grade students at St. Joseph's school who will be attending a Catholic High School in the Diocese of Tucson.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish - Florence
Provides for the needs of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Florence, Arizona.

Edward Rosettie Memorial
Established in memory of Edward Rosettie, beloved brother of Msgr. Frederick D. Rosettie, to support financially disadvantaged parishes.

Holy Family Parish - Tucson
Provides for the needs of Holy Family Parish.

Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Charitable Works Fund - Miami
Provides for the charitable outreach programs of the parish.

Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish - Miami
Established by a donor, to support the ministries of the parish.

Our Lady of the Valley Parish - Green Valley
Receives and holds funds to provide for the needs of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Green Valley.

Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish - Tombstone
Established by the parish in 1995 to support Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.

St. Andrew the Apostle Parish - Sierra Vista
Established to receive and hold gifts to provide for the long term needs of the parish.

St. Augustine Cathedral - Tucson
Established with a gift from Mr. Michael H. O'Brien and others, to meet the needs of the parish.

St. Cyril of Alexandria Parish - Tucson
Established with an initial gift from the estate of Ms. Marie Debois, to support outreach ministries of the parish.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish - Tucson
Established in memory of Mr. Richard (Dick) W. Stringer, to support the needs of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish – Elfreda
Provides income to support the parish

St. Francis de Sales Parish - Tucson
Established with gifts from a number of donors, including a bequest from Mr. John M. Granberry, Jr., to support the needs of the parish.

St. Helen Parish - Eloy
Established by the parish to receive and hold contributions to support the parish.

St. Patrick Parish - Bisbee
Established with an initial gift from Ms. Ruth Whitehead, to support the various programs and projects of the parish.

St. Thomas More Newman Center - Tucson
Established to provide scholarships to students attending the University of Arizona who are actively involved at the Newman Center.

 

Religious Endowments

Education of Seminarians
Established through a bequest by long time Diocesan archivist, Catherine 'Kit' Dougherty, to support the education of seminarians.

Bishop Francis J. Green
Established in honor of Bishop Francis J. Green, the fourth Bishop of Tucson and one of the original incorporators of the Catholic Foundation, to support the on-going formation of priests in the Diocese of Tucson.

Robert J. and Ann D. Hout
Established by Robert J. Hout, in memory of his late wife Ann D. Hout, to provide scholarships to men studying to be priests in the Diocese of Tucson.

Bishop Manuel D. Moreno Fund for Vocations
Established with a gift from the estate of Bishop Moreno to support vocations programs in the Diocese of Tucson.
